Collecting Matchcovers!
Are you looking for a hobby that’s fun, stimulating and a great avenue
for meeting other people? If you’ve picked up a matchbook in a
restaurant, a barber shop, a bank or other business establishment, you
may be on your way to collecting matchcovers.
Why do we call it matchcover collecting, because the covers are what we
save after we have collected the matchbooks!
Matchbooks and match boxes are certainly becoming harder to find these
days, but in a recent New York Times article, it states that even though
smoking has been banned in most restaurants and other public venues,
many businesses have decided that not only is it a great advertising
venue as it always was, but it is a significantly affordable form of
advertising as well and who isn’t looking for affordable in this day and
age.
Mark Nackman, owner of AdMatch states that “When a state or municipality
imposes a ban, we see a hesitation in reordering and a fall-off in new
business,” but “Then the volumes start to creep back up, so that within
a year or so we see some resurgence in statewide sales. Matches have
universal appeal, and that’s the mystery — that one little package could
resonate with familiarity, maybe beauty, and a feeling of value.”
It’s true that restaurants and bars have tried other small forms of
advertising like coasters, napkins and business cards, but they are just
not as much fun as putting a book or box of matches in your pocket or
purse. Also they fill the perfect age-old purpose of phone number
collection from newly met acquaintances. (Even if you have your
blackberry with you)!
At first you might pick up all the matches you can find, but “All”
covers a lot of territory and you will probably want to narrow your
field of endeavor very soon. Everyone has a favorite collectible, some
collect trucks or trains, girlies are ever popular and casinos are a big
hit. Some of these categories are long defunct, but can be bought on
Ebay and from other collectors, they are also available through

with your fellow club members. Your best bet is to join a club, go to
the meetings and have access to all the freebie tables and on-site
auctions. This will help to define your wants for matchcovers.
Part of the fun, of course, occurs after some of the other members know
what you collect and then because all of our members are so generous,
you will start getting matchcovers from many sources.
How many people do you know that have a glass bowl filled with matches
on their coffee table? Sally up to them, because there might be gold in
them ‘thar bowls’.

Basic
Training for Trading
Trading is not only vital to the hobby, but its results
constitute some of the most important advantages that the hobby
has to offer collectors. And, as is often the case with so many
crucial processes, trading is often a delicate and fragile
affair. It needs to be initiated, nurtured, guarded, and often
repaired in order to operate advantageously. |
